Nanfang Daily (Reporter/Wang Xiangbo) Recently, the first and third ice-breaker built by Sun Yat-sen University in China, "Sun Yat-sen University Polar", carried out a sea trial in the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Sea, to test the ship's low-temperature navigation and ice-breaking ability.
The "Sun Yat-sen University Polar" set off from the coast of the South China Sea on January 17, crossed the South China Sea, the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea, experienced strong winds and waves in winter, and reached the Liaodong Bay of the Bohai Sea.
In recent days, most of our country has experienced a cold wave. On January 24, the sea ice area of the Liaodong Bay in the Bohai Sea of China exceeded 10000 square kilometers, the outer boundary line reached 56 nautical miles, and the maximum ice thickness exceeded 35 cm, a new high in recent years.
The sudden cold wave did not affect the trial voyage of the "Sun Yat-sen University Polar". The maximum ice-breaking capacity of the ship can reach 2.2 meters of ice thickness. According to the guidance of satellite images, the "Sun Yat-sen University Polar" in silver armor headed for the sea area with the most severe sea ice.
During the voyage, the scientific research team took the ice-breaking scene of the "Sun Yat-sen University Polar" with UAV. Under the pressure of the bow, the sea ice in Liaodong Bay made a crisp breaking sound. On the magnificent northern border of the motherland, the ice-breaker has drawn a brilliant arc, which is spectacular.
"Sun Yat-sen University Polar" is another "big shot" of Sun Yat-sen University to serve the strategy of marine power after the "Sun Yat-sen University" marine comprehensive scientific research practice ship was put into use. The ship has a displacement of 5852 tons, a length of 78.95 meters, a width of 17.22 meters, and a draft of 8.16 meters. Its ice-breaking capacity ranks among the top in the world. On September 30, 2022, Sun Yat-sen University held a naming ceremony for the ship. Not long ago, the ship completed the sea trial mission in Guishan waters.
After the Bohai Sea ice-breaking trial, the "Sun Yat-sen University Polar" will officially join the ranks of China's polar ice-breaking scientific research ships, contributing to China's polar scientific research.
